WAY WE WORK
PROCESS & SERVICES
We’ve perfected a simple approach to serving our customers, one that follows a tried and tested process yet offers the flexibility to meet any specific needs. Crucially, we can do as much or little as you like, supplying only the carpet itself, or providing a full ‘turnkey’ service including measuring up and final fitting, anywhere in the world. Alternatively, just select what you need from our portfolio of services.
1. BRIEFING
We’ll discuss your project with you and take all the details we need, providing an estimate based on the size and quality of your carpet.
We enjoy exclusive access to an archive of more than 5,000 existing John Crossley designs, each one a unique and beautiful product of its particular historic era. Inspired by themes like nature or geometry, then perfected in the iconic aesthetic styles of renowned designers, these are combinations of pattern and colour which have already graced prestigious homes, palaces and institutions all over the world.
2. INITIAL DESIGN & QUOTE
We’ll either design your carpet from scratch or help you choose a design from our archive of more than 5,000 classics, each of which we can customise to your specifications. We can also discuss the quality of carpet you’d like to commission, and advise you on aspects like its orientation and layout. If it’s helpful, we can also supply a ‘hand trial’ sample of your carpet, woven on our looms. Once your final design is agreed, we’ll quote based on one of three options:
• Manufacture only
• Manufacture and making up (seaming)
• Manufacture, making up and fitting/installing
3. YARN AND LOOM PREPARATION
Now begins the complex process of sourcing and preparing the yarns and setting up the loom. This includes yarn selection, dyeing, measuring, counting and winding the yarn onto bobbins, as well as jacquard stamping and the loading of the loom’s creel. A test piece is made first, then cross- referenced with the brief to ensure a precise colour and pattern match.
4. SHEARING AND STEAMING
The cut pile quality is sheared on our cropping machine, then all carpets are steamed.
5. FINAL INSPECTION
Every carpet undergoes rigorous inspection by hand and eye, only ‘passing’ when we’re completely satisfied that it’s good enough to put our name to. A final invoice will be raised at this point.
DESIGN CREATION, CURATION OR SOURCING
We can create one-off bespoke designs or source the perfect existing design from our exclusive collection of more than 5,000.
Our design service can work from any number of stylistic inspirations including architrave, fabrics, fretwork, photographs, paintings or other artworks.
We can also replicate existing interior patterns or create a design in a particular style, or to accurately convey a historical era. We can also collate and curate private collections.

Our bespoke designs are unique one-offs created from scratch just for you. Perhaps you have a design in mind and can send us an image to work from? Or maybe you’d like us to precisely recreate a carpet from a National Trust or Park Services heritage property? Either way, we’ll work with you to first conceive your design, then create accurate visuals refined to perfection. We can even send you a woven sample. Whatever it takes to turn your personal concept into a unique and beautiful Brussels Wilton carpet.
COLOUR IDENTIFICATION
Decades of expertise in colour and colour placement mean we can advise you in this area, including providing selections of tufts and poms, or dyes to match literally any item. Using printed or digital CAD imagery, we can also support the colour and pattern element of any project.
HAND TRIALS
We can supply hand trials woven on our production looms of your chosen designs and colours, using either our extensive bank of yarns or yarns dyed specifically for the project.
MEASURE AND INSTALL
We can estimate from plans or measure at your property, with decades of expertise in both.
AREA PREPARATION
We can advise on – and supply – various different underlays and flooring substrates, including using various heritage techniques.
SEAMING OR MAKING UP
We can produce and perfectly seam together your rug or room blanket, applying a variety of finishes like binding and whipping.
BESPOKE DESIGNS
